Here's a little story for you. I have a friend that wrote a book. She asked another friend to review it for her. She really wanted an honest review. What she got was a big suprise. It seems after she gave her friend the book to review, her friend got angry with her about something that had nothing to do with teh book. So the friend who was reviewing the book decided to really let her have it. She gave her a one star on Amazon and posted it everywhere else. Prior to that review she had gotten all 5 star reviews. So that was a definate OUCH! I guess there is no way to prevent this other than just be careful not to tick off the people reviewing your book!
One never knows...when you give your work to someone to review, it's always like exposing your inner self. You may get punched in the proverbial gut. People often forget that writers have a personal tie. A review---especially a bad one--needs to be given with thought and possibly constructive criticism. Loved your post.
Patrick, I totally agree with what you said. I think some people just don't realize how much of an author is actually poured into every book they write.
I had a similar experience with another Author. She sent me her book to review. The only thing was that there were so many typos and grammatical errors it made it hard to read. The plot was also dated and over-used. She had some good characters that she could really develop into something wonderful with just a few additions. I emailed her my carefully worded suggestions before posting and she got extremely vindictive. She wrote her review of my book that was so out of line with what other reviews consisted of that it was very obvious it was a revenge review. I explained to her that posting such a review would only hurt us both (and might make her revenge public). To date, she has not posted that nasty revenge review. I also had to agree not to post my review. (I never post a review that is less than three stars... I know how hard it is to build a reputation!)
Wow! What an experience! I am like you and will not post anything under a three. I take it a step farther, I will email and ask if they want it posted. Most of the time they do. I think they realize like I do that a lack of reviews is just as much an indicator of a problem as a bunch of bad reviews. Personally, I do not want someone to quit writing due to something I might have said. We all have our own opinions on everything and what is right for one may not be right for another. I am really glad you were able to talk some sense into that person. Good for you!
